Some Tough Numbers

Monthly Report: November 2003 Click for PDF
PLO Leader: Yasser Arafat

By Asher Intrater

Personally, I'm not in favor of "expelling" Arafat from Israel. Strategically I think it would just make him an international ambassador of terror. However the recent vote (September 19, 2003) in the UN was for just the opposite reasons: to demonstrate support for Arafat.

These were tough numbers: 133 against Israel, 15 abstentions, 35 absentees and 3 for Israel.

It's hard for Israel to figure out just what it is that those nations want to support. There was a certain advance on peace initiatives between Sharon and Abu Mazen. Then the PLO under Arafat, and the Jihad-Hamas coalition torpedoed the process. Arafat did so by undermining Abu Mazen until he resigned in dispair. Arafat then appointed a new prime minister, Ahmed Qurei, who now, after a few weeks, has announced that he too will resign. Meanwhile, Jihad and Hamas killed the peace process by terrorist attacks.
And the UN wants to express support for Arafat.

Those numbers begin to sound like the seemingly unbelievable prophecies in Zechariah that all the nations of the world would come against Israel to battle (Zechariah 14:2).

My youngest son Amiel, age 11, sat next to me as we read the paper and said, "Why does it seem like everyone is always against us?" (We then had a brief conversation in which he noted everything that Islam seems to hate: Israelis, Americans, Evangelical Christians and Jews - we're all of them put together.)

US President Bush made a very simple and clear statement that Arafat had proven himself untrustworthy, that he has not done anything to stop the terrorism, and that he was the key person who undermined the peace talks. Bush seems to have a very strong quality of speaking honestly even when it is highly unpopular.

Here are some other tough figures: 900 million dollars!

That's the amount that the new Palestinian Authority treasurer Salam Fayad has uncovered in a hidden personal account that Arafat has amassed by siphoning tax money given by Israel and intended to help the Palestinian Authority function. (Israel paid money to the PA for tax revenue on oil, cigarettes and alcohol.) Thank God for the good work that Fayad is doing to clean up the accounts in the PA.

Here's another tough figure: 3 million people.

That's the number of Palestinian and/or Israeli Arabs living west of the Jordan river - in other words, in the sovereign Israeli and disputed territories. The problem is - that's a big number. There is no simple solution, either on left wing politics or right wing politics. We can't make them all citizens; we can't move them all; we can't grant them full statehood; we can't fight them all the time.

Many of the simplistic "prophetic" solutions presented by my dear friends among Christian Zionists and Messianic Jews are not dealing with the reality of the present population of the Palestinians. There is a humanitarian, social, demographic, economic and logistic problem of immense complexity. We have to deal with both the long-term prophetic issues as well as the immediate humanitarian issues at the same time. While we have to fight terrorism and fight it militarily, our hearts have to be broken for the suffering of this group of 3 million people.

Here's another tough figure: 21 countries.

There are 21 Islamic/Arab nations surrounding and adjacent to Israel. Just what exactly are the claims of "colonialism" and "occupation" by Israel on this land? The talk about the return to the '67 borders ignores the fact that there was no Palestinian state in 1967. The border in Gaza was with Egypt; the border in the West Bank was with Jordan.

One last interesting figure: 400 shekels.

That's the amount of money that Abraham paid to buy the cave of Machpelah from Ephron in the area of Hebron to bury Sarah his wife. Later Abraham himself, Isaac, Rebecca, and Jacob were buried there as well. The money was counted and weighed and delivered in a legal contract of the day. The account in Genesis 23 represents the first commercial document recording ownership of this hotly disputed land.

Please continue to pray for the peace of Jerusalem (Psalms 122:6), for all Israel to be saved (Romans 11:26) and for righteousness in the government of Israel (Isaiah 1:26).

Shabbat in Tel Aviv
By Christy Wilkerson

It was a day I shall not forget for a long time. It had been three years since I had visited Israel. And the changes were remarkable from beginning to end.

Shabbat morning Shira and I arrived at the congregation just in time for it to begin. It was teeming with activity and energy…Holy Spirit energy. And the 200-seat hall was FULL of people…especially young people…and lots of children.

What changes had occurred in the last three years - Ari and Shira were no longer setting up tables, serving tea and coffee, arranging chairs, or leading the worship and playing the keyboard. Others were talented in those areas and energetically serving those capacities. Believers were joyfully attending to the children, the young people, the hospitality area. The worship team, full of bright young Israelis were in full swing.

The atmosphere was charged with joy and thanksgiving. After all, it was Succoth, (the Feast of Tabernacles), the happiest holiday of the year when God commanded the Jewish people to rejoice! Different leaders-in-the-making prayed, taught and exhorted the congregation. Ari then pastored the people with his preaching.

It was a privilege to see what God is doing at Tiferet Yeshua (The Glory of Yeshua) congregation. The building was filled to capacity. There is no more room for others…they must immediately add another service to accommodate the crowd…believers and seekers both.

But that was just the beginning. The REAL story was AFTER the service, when Ari and Shira invited a couple to join us for a light lunch at their apartment. The man, Ofer, immediately engaged me in conversation as Shira was preparing the salad and Ari was opening up cold drinks and setting out the pitas. He began to tell me his story.

He began searching six years ago…looking for answers. He found the "new agers" and that brought a little insight, but not the truth. He had a thriving business, but when a CRISIS came, he did not know where to turn. That is when he said an "angel" came to him and pointed him in the direction of Yeshua.

He found Yeshua, his Messiah, six months ago. But his wife did not know how to respond to this newfound faith. He began sharing with her some of the Hebrew books that Maoz Israel had translated and published, and she began reading them.

Two months ago, she also accepted Yeshua as her Messiah. He said, so matter-of-factly, "Before (she started reading the books) I could not get through to her, but after reading some of the books, she is like a TRAIN…I can't stop her!"

THAT is the power of the printed page…it speaks in their language, and penetrates their heart. The value of a Hebrew book is incalculable. But in our afternoon conversation, I heard firsthand how it was a tool to bring another Hebrew-speaking Israeli to the faith!

About this time, another couple, one in leadership for several years in our congregation, joined us for lunch, and as he entered, Ofer said, "There is my angel." Yossi, who had shared the truth of the Messiah with him in his hour of crisis, was his "angel."

Ofer told me his mother and father had disowned him because of his faith, but he believes in due time his parents will come to the faith. But Ofer said, with tears, "I am not fatherless…Ari is my father" - teaching him the truths of the scriptures and helping him to handle the challenging circumstances in his life.

THAT was a testimony that will stay with me for a while. An angel, a father, and the power of the written word in his own language…that is what it took to convince this Israeli family that God truly loves them and has a wonderful plan for their life.
Rest assured, your giving is allowing Ari and Shira to minister the love of Yeshua to more people than ever before. Your giving is allowing more books to be translated and printed and distributed throughout Israel.

Your giving is providing more chairs for more seekers to attend the congregation. Your giving is helping the congregation to thrive and flourish. It is purchasing worship and sound equipment so that there is an excellent presentation of the Gospel to those who attend. It is helping the widows and orphans to find hope and relief in desperate economic and political times in Israel. Your giving is EFFECTIVE and bringing forth FRUIT - more and more Israelis are coming to the Lord!

This is a wonderful time to be a partner with Maoz Israel Ministries! There is more happening in Israel now than ever before! And you are a vital partner in everything happening! THANK YOU for sharing our passion that ALL ISRAEL SHALL BE SAVED!

   November 2003

   Dear Maoz Partner,

It used to be that very few Israelis made that fateful decision to follow Yeshua.

Many times a person would spend years processing the Messianic scriptures of the prophets and the claims of the New Testament. When these few Israelis finally became convinced of the Truth, they had usually been spoon-fed by another believer who would invest years of teaching the Scriptures to them (because there were only a handful of spiritual-growth books in Hebrew they could read).

But now things are different. Every week in our congregation, a number of unbelievers attend, brought by friends and relatives. Often they possess only a rudimentary understanding of faith in Messiah Yeshua. But when they encounter a relatively large crowd of born-again Israelis, hear the exhilarating worship in song and experience the convicting Word of God, they immediately come to the altar and ask God to save them and invite Yeshua to be their Messiah and Lord.

Virtually every week we have Israelis come forward to receive salvation, many of whom are first-timers. But often then, doubts arise and within a few days, they are uncertain of their experience, uncertain of who Yeshua really is, and urgently needing Biblical teaching concerning their new-found faith. Understandably, they hardly have a clue as to what it means to live an overcoming life separated from the world's values.

We and our leadership team are here to serve the searchers and the ever-growing number of new believers in our congregation and to train a new generation of potential leaders to do the same. We know that pastors of other congregations are facing the same challenges as we are, with their swelling number of new believers coming to faith.

There is no doubt that evangelism books greatly help to bring Israelis to salvation. For that reason we have published over a hundred and fifty thousand evangelism books in Hebrew.

It is equally true that books leading the believer to spiritual growth is one of the most successful means to see a harvest of maturing Israelis move from the infant stage to men and women of God, able to lead others to Messiah.

We are asking for your partnership to produce these books which will show the way to the abundant life for the people of Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa and throughout the nation.

For the salvation of the people of Israel,

Ari & Shira Sorko-Ram

P.S. All funds designated for the translation and publishing of Hebrew books will go entirely for that purpose.
